Talk to your GP or Specialist about getting a referral so you can make an appointment with Lyn either in person or online.

What to expect at your appointment

First, get your specialist or GP to send me a referral.

Having your blood test results and full medical history from your doctor means I have all the information I need to give you fully personalised and tailored information at your first consultation. So we can make the most of your time, and you get the information you need to prevent stone recurrence without delay.

Head over here to find out how to get the referral.  And what should your doctor include in your referral. When I have your referral, my receptionist will be in touch with you to book your first appointment.

You can attend your appointment in person if you’re in Auckland or online throughout New Zealand.

Our first appointment together

Put aside 45 minutes for our first appointment together. Your doctor's referral will give me your test results and medical history.

Please bring your 3-day food record with you. It can be helpful to bring a support person to our meeting. If you’re not the person regularly cooking or shopping for food, bringing that person with you might be best.

Our first appointment is about getting to know you and what you need support with. We’ll spend time talking about your nutrition questions and what will help you achieve your goals. If available, I’ll already have your 24-hour urine tests, blood tests, and stone analysis, as well as other relevant information from your doctor. So, we’ll review these results together and ensure you understand them.

I’m a dietitian, so we’ll talk about what you eat, what you like to eat, when and where you eat, and why you make the food choices you do. This will help me tailor my advice to be as practical and relevant to your life as possible.

Then, we’ll talk about how you can help identify risk factors for developing kidney stones and how to manage your kidney stones. The good news is that research shows us that what you eat and drink can help you reduce the risk of stone formation and manage stone formation. When you leave, you’ll have a tailored, nutrition plan and supporting information to help you manage your kidney stones clearly and leave you feeling confidently in control.  I’ll write to your doctor and give you a copy, to tell them what we’ve spoken about.

At your follow-up appointment

Your follow-up appointment will be 30 minutes long. If we need another 24-hour urine test before your appointment, I’ll contact you to let you know. You might need another 24-hour urine test to check your progress with reducing urinary risk factors with nutrition intervention.

It is an opportunity for you to check in with me and ask any questions or express any concerns you might have. And we’ll see how you’re progressing  with your nutrition goals and provide further suggestions to help you achieve your goals

Before you come to your appointment, you might want to think about any questions you’d like to ask. Here are some examples.

  • Is the nutrition advice different for different stones?
  • What are kidney stones, and what are they made of?
  • What can increase your risk of stones?

“I’ve already tried everything, how can you help?!”  and other questions you might have

I've already tried everything to prevent kidney stones, and nothing works. How is your service different?

This common concern actually highlights your greatest opportunity. Unlike general dietary advice, my personalised nutrition counselling is tailored specifically to your lifestyle, cultural and food preferences, and health needs. By focusing on strategies tailored to your type of kidney stone, nutrition risk factors, lifestyle, and food preferences, we can more effectively transform past failures into a roadmap for success.

Isn't reducing calcium in my diet the best way to prevent kidney stones? That's what I've always heard.

This is a common misconception. In reality, a well-balanced calcium intake is crucial for preventing certain types of kidney stones, such as calcium oxalate stones. My approach busts this myth by showing you how to balance your diet for your specific needs and actual type of kidney stones, empowering you with the knowledge to make informed decisions about your nutrition and debunking one-size-fits-all solutions.

What makes you different from other dietitians or nutritionists?

What sets this service apart is the focus on kidney stones and a deep understanding of how lifestyle, nutrition, and individual health intertwine. Unlike broader nutrition services, I offer specialised knowledge in renal dietetics, a commitment to evidence-based practices, and a personal approach that considers your unique story. Thus, I make the journey towards better health a collaborative and informed one.

I have a busy schedule. How much time will this take?

Time is precious, and this service is designed to fit into your life, not overtake it. Initial consultations are 45 minutes, and follow-ups are 30 minutes. They’re structured to provide maximum value within a manageable timeframe. With options for online appointments, you have the flexibility to seek guidance without disrupting your daily routine.

How do I get started with your service?

Beginning this journey towards kidney stone prevention is simple. The first step is getting a referral from your doctor. From there, we'll schedule your initial consultation to discuss your needs and goals.
